<image:caption>By Stephanie Danler This book made me now think (realize?) that everyone working at fancy restaurants does cocaine and has sex with each other. Granted it was the 90’s so who knows if it’s like that now. If this sounds up your alley (you probably know who you are), then read it. It was fun, fast-paced, and definitely intriguing. I sort of hated the main character for being so miserable all the time, but I guess it makes sense since the story is about her ~personal growth~.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By Matthew Futterman At this point in my reading journey I’m back from abroad and doing a Maymester at UNC. We read this for my sports marketing class and I surprisingly really liked it. Definitely non-fiction, but this book walks you through the business of sports – from a time when athletes basically played for fun in the 50s to the multi-billion dollar industry it is today.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 2019 Book Round Up - 1. Little Fires Everywhere</image:title>
<image:caption>By Celeste Ng Everyone and their mother was reading this book, so I read this book. Hot take: I didn’t love it and I thought it was depressing. To be fair, I had just gotten to Lyon, France for my semester abroad, I was probably experiencing a bit of culture shock, and I was reading this book by flickering lamplight in my box of an apartment where I lived alone. Things just kept getting worse for the characters and reading this stressed me out. The book was still entertaining and well-written, but I didn’t get the hype.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By Mohsin Hamid This book was interesting because I couldn’t exactly place the genre and I haven’t read any other books like it. Think: refugee love story with a magical/metaphorical twist. I’d say read it because it’s different, a quick read, and a totally new, allegorical perspective on the refugee crisis.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Fitting and satisfying that my favorite book of 2019 was also my last. Adichie talks about race in a way that’s so comprehensive and approachable that you genuinely finish this book feeling more knowledgeable and inspired. Ifemelu’s story is told in part by her blogs where she discusses what it means to be black in the US after leaving her home Nigeria. Her writing style is blunt and lyrical at the same time; something I’m now desperately trying to channel in writing my own blogs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By Marisa Silver I got this book on clearance at a bookstore in Vermont and it shows. I usually love fantasy but this book was beyond weird. I really don’t remember much (not a bad thing) except for the fact that this girl turns into a wolf and then has wolf sex with other wolves. Plus she’s a wolf now so she can’t talk and her thoughts are pretty limited. That’s a no from me dawg.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By Min Jin Lee Despite being one of the New York Times “Best Books of 2017”, Pachinko was probably my least favorite of 2019. In about 500 pages, this loose semblance of a story covers three generations of a Korean family over 100 years. There was so much going on, and yet so little – I didn’t really feel connected to any of the characters. I think it was my competitive edge alone that made me finish the last 200 pages.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 2019 Book Round Up - 9,10,11,12. Outlander Series (Books 1-4)</image:title>
<image:caption>By Diana Gabaldon This series is the definition of “watching porn for the plot.” Combat nurse Claire Randall finds herself transported from 1945 to 1743, where she quickly finds herself caught up in the lives of the Scottish clans and in the midst of a steamy romance with a Highlander. Sure, things get a little Fifty Shades, but the story is actually really good. To my defense, I only read four out of the eight books in the series before I decided to rejoin the more literary community. If sexy time traveling historical fiction sounds like the genre for you – read away.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By Phil Knight This was one of the best books I read this year. I never knew a non-fiction memoir could be such a page turner, but I was fully hooked on Phil Knight’s every word about how he created Nike. An inspiring inside look into the blood, (emphasis on) sweat, and tears it takes to start a company.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - When it rains in Chapel Hill, it pours</image:title>
<image:caption>In Chapel Hill, you feel the rain before you see it. The heavy air around you lights up with this electric current and the humidity seeps through your clothes and into your skin. The space around you becomes so charged that I swear you can hear it hum until this ringing buzz finally settles in your spine. At home, you smell it first. All of a sudden you’ll notice that it smells like asphalt and dirt and pennies. The air you breathe feels earthy and briny, like freshly cut grass or like swallowing salt water. The air around you is cold and warm all at once. When the rain starts to fall here in North Carolina, you get an impatient warning of one or two drops on your nose before the skies open up. It’s like popping a balloon by squeezing it with your hands, or like running a scissor over the taut tape on an overstuffed package. All of a sudden it’s like you’re standing in the shower or just dove underneath a wave.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why the New York Times Crossword is the best subscription you can get</image:title>
<image:caption>My dad, my brother Axel, and I have an ongoing competition to see who can get the best time on the daily mini. Instead of playing Candy Crush while she waits in the school pick-up line, my mom will take a stab at the daily puzzle. The crossword provides for some productive screen time that doesn’t make you feel like you’re actively losing brain cells. As an ice breaker for one of my classes this semester, we had to go around the room, introduce ourselves, and share what our favorite gift we received over the holidays was (yes, weird and potentially problematic). Amid enough AirPods and Apple Watches to fill an Apple Store, I told the class that my favorite gift was the NYTimes Crossword subscription. I either sounded like the most boring human on the planet or like I was totally on to something. I’m going with the latter. So do yourself a favor and add the NYTimes Crossword to your collection of subscriptions (and probably cancel shit like Acorn TV while you’re at it).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why the New York Times Crossword is the best subscription you can get</image:title>
<image:caption>Thankfully, for Christmas my dad gave our family the gift that keeps on giving: the New York Times Crossword yearly subscription. Now, I can’t imagine why we ever – or anyone would ever – hesitate making this purchase. Out of all the dizzying, mind-numbing subscriptions you can have these days (and believe me, my family has them all), the NYTimes Crossword will be your best dollar spent. Thanks to five family members each with different interests (my younger brother Hugo has watched over 500 hours of Naruto), we’ve amassed an almost shameful amount of subscriptions. Between Spotify, Disney+ and Acorn TV (yes, that exists), the NYTimes Crossword is the only subscription I’ve ever felt truly bettered by. I’ve found the crossword to be a great outlet for stress, a way to improve your vocabulary, and even surprisingly social. Unless it’s a mini or a Monday puzzle (they start off easy and get harder as the week goes on), or unless you’re some type of random trivia genius, it’s hard to solve these puzzles on your own.</image:caption>

<image:caption>And then everything changed. It was November 27th 2013 – the official theatrical release, and I didn’t know it yet, but every single one of my future interactions with total strangers was about to be impacted by Frozen. From the very first trailer I saw and whisper I heard of Disney naming its newest heroine Elsa, I knew I was done for (not to mention the impending boom of new baby Elsa’s). The safe haven of uniqueness in which I’d been living my life was about to be turned upside down by the behemoth that is Disney. I’m being generous here, but I actually think the very first time I was asked “Do you want to build a snowman?” I found it funny. After that, every other person to ask me that cursed question, for one, wholeheartedly believed they were the first person to come up with that, and two, didn’t exactly get a jolly laugh from the Elsa in question.</image:caption>

<image:caption>But let me tell you, the many joys of coloring far outweigh whatever horrible marker colors I’m forced to endure. For starters, it’s incredibly satisfying. It’s not very hard, but it’s still slightly more active than binging a show, since you have to choose your colors and stay inside the lines. In a sad way, you actually even feel productive when you, say, finish coloring in a particularly detailed tree (fist shaking at the heavens for what my life has come to). Considering I’ve essentially been spending every waking moment with my mom, coloring is also the ideal quarantine “hang out.” You’re still in the presence of others, totally don’t have to talk (what else is there to say?), and can listen to music and exchange a few words here and there.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Coloring through quarantine</image:title>
<image:caption>This also means you could call me an advanced colorer. My fine motor skills (when it comes to a dual-tip marker) would totally smoke those of a 4-year-old. Anyways, the coloring books arrive and mom and I naïvely embark on our coloring journey. I start off with this butterfly page (which lowkey took me almost two full days to not even complete) and I quickly realize that these lines are tiny and this is actually pretty intricate stuff, plus now I have a headache. But I can’t stop. Mom’s got more of a scene going on, which looks a lot more interesting than my mind-numbing butterflies, so I bail on those and find my own garden oasis scene to color in. Still, this all seems pretty low-stakes but you would not imagine the stress coloring can create.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Coloring through quarantine</image:title>
<image:caption>Some colors (we’ve learned the hard way) are just totally off-limits. Take this innocuous orange, which, in reality, is anything but. Mom and I have decided that unless you’re coloring pumpkins (which I actually did in this harvest vibe scene below), steer straight clear of this color. For some reason, it just creates this horrible eye-sore on your near-perfect illustration, and no shade can save it. Speaking of saving your masterpiece, this puke green shade they include in the pack is also a (fairly obvious) bad choice. Mom unfortunately used it to color her acorns (not to mention she also used the aforementioned treacherous orange), tried saving it with a navy blue overlay, and ended up with, well, this:</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why my socially-distanced birthday was my best one yet</image:title>
<image:caption>In a time of isolation, sadness and uncertainty, these less-than-interactions translated to the fullest and most generous outpourings of love. Getting a honk and a wave from two of my longest, closest friends felt like the wildest birthday bash. Seeing my healthy and happy grandparent’s smiling faces (and Papa Papa’s pretty epic quarantine beard) was the most priceless present. The fact that my family of five can turn into a party made me realize that they’re all I need. Against all odds, my birthday in quarantine was just like any other normal, extra special day in the confines of my home, complete with burgers and beer pong. My 21st in Amsterdam made me feel happy and lucky, but my 22nd in quarantine showed me that I’m truly fortunate and blessed. There was even a rainbow after the hail, I shit you not.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why my socially-distanced birthday was my best one yet</image:title>
<image:caption>Mom is setting up for her behind the back rebound shot. She takes her aim (sort of) and sends the ping pong ball toward her hopeful target of Solo cups at the other end of the table. It should be noted that the cups were filled with water instead of beer so that our family wouldn’t single handedly create a new strain of COVID-19 by tossing a ping pong ball that had been suspiciously manhandled and rolled around in the corners of our garage into perfectly drinkable beer. By this point the ball is hurtling through space, goes completely haywire, and in an absolute feat of athleticism, lands in the wicker basket of my childhood bike, far, far from the cups. Buckets are buckets, so we all drink to that.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’m a middle child with two very different brothers. Thus, a mediator. I’m both independent and collaborative; fun-loving and hardworking. I’m Swedish and American. My global perspective came from attending school in Sweden and France and helped form my diverse views and unique perspective on both myself and others. I’m in the middle of being a student and whatever comes next. I say ‘whatever comes next’ because I’m in the middle of that too – I love the creativity of copywriting and the structure of a strategist.</image:caption>
